How much sugar is in your tonic water?

August 2, 2019 BY One Drink A Day

You’d be surprised at how many people assume tonic water is the same as soda/sparkling water i.e. contains no sugar. Today I want to highlight how much sugar is actually in your tonic water.

This article is in no way trying to say don’t drink tonic water but just an observation that I have made.

I’m using Coca Cola as the reference mixer to compare the tonic waters with. Coke has 10.6grams of sugar per 100mls.

I’ve chosen a few brands of tonic waters from the supermarket and will list the grams of sugar per 100mls below for each.

8.7 grams of sugar per 100mls

7.1 grams of sugar per 100mls

8.6 grams of sugar per 100mls

8.6 grams of sugar per 100mls

100mls of tonic is the amount shown in the glass. The first tube is how much sugar coke has per 100mls. The middle one shows the tonic with the least amount of sugar at around 7 grams while the far right is the highest sugar content at 8.6grams per 100mls. When you lay it out like this it’s a lot of sugar for such a small amount of tonic.

What about low sugar tonic water?

2.9 grams of sugar per 100mls

2.9 grams of sugar per 100mls

The left tube again is how much sugar coke has per 100mls while the right tube is the sugar content of the low sugar tonic waters that I looked at (about 1/3 the sugar content).

I try and drink zero sugar tonic waters….. I know many taste super rank but there are some really great Australian brands (Nexba and Naked Life) that I’ve found which don’t compromise on taste.

Any way there you go. Have a great Friday.
